KEYNOTES OF ANIMAL HEALTH ~ A WHOLE-FARM APPROACH TO ACHIEVING HEALTH, PRODUCTIVITY & NUTRITIONAL QUALITY

December 2-3, 2008

8:30 am- 5 pm

The lesson that “grass is best” is now almost cliché at organic/sustainable farming conferences. The next level of knowledge for the grazier is what constitutes the best grass. Food is vastly complex, and Jerry Brunetti’s advanced discussion moves beyond the simplistic measures of crude protein, rate of gain, feed conversion, etc., to look at feedstuffs from the perspective of supplied amino acids, fatty acids, essential sugars, phyto-alexins, pigments, fat- and water-soluble vitamins and more.

Whether dairy or beef, pigs or small ruminants, a healthy herd begins with such keystone concepts as biodiversity on the farm, acid/alkali balance in feedstuffs, nutrient-dense forages, and more. Eco-consultant and livestock feed specialist Jerry Brunetti details the key management issues for a successful livestock operation. Learn why mineral rich foods are the best medicine. Understand why true livestock health lies in soil ecology and a foundation based on sound soil science. Learn what kinds of recipes---plants, minerals, vitamins, phyto-ceuticals, nutri-ceuticals and essential oils---can be incorporated into a therapeutic arsenal of livestock remedies to both prevent and treat animal ailments.

A popular speaker at eco-farming events around the world, Brunetti explains the laws of nature in terms farmers can embrace and doles out specific steps you can utilize on your farm right away. The seminar will have a heavy emphasis on ruminants, but the principles and lessons also cover pigs, poultry, horses and companion animals.

Corpus Agrarius: Understanding the Futility of Organic Monoculture

 Friday Dec. 5, 2008

10:30 am-12 noon

To be truly sustainable farming systems need to be inner-related eco-systems, not merely organic monocultures. Resistance against the challenges of weather, insects and diseases relies upon the farm being an organism of multiple organs consisting of microbes, soil, plants and animals that communicate, cooperate, self-organize and become mutual symbionts. In turn, they collectively produce food that is abundant, artisanal, culturally empowering, nutritionally concentrated and profoundly medicinal.

COWS, CANCER & CONSCIOUSNESS

Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008

2-5 pm

Our modern medical achievements costing trillions of research dollars have yielded us the stark result of a 40% incidence of cancer in the United States. The intelligence of the cell and its ability to communicate its needs while learning and remembering its environment is dependent upon foods that modulate healthy cellular behavior. Green plants, growing upon a mineral-rich substrate, as well as those grass-fed livestock products produced by animals consuming them, are the genesis of what we desperately need to remain healthy and reverse the chronic illness and malaise of our modern, industrial existence. See www.acresusa.com for further details.

Health From The Ground Up
Growing Quality Forages and Hardy Livestock: A Day With Jerry Brunetti
NOFA-VT and UVM Extension invite you to a classroom and on-farm workshop given by Jerry Brunetti, focusing on dairy
ruminant nutrition on a high forage diet.
Thursday, September 7 in Randolph Center, VT at VT Technical College.
Friday, September 8 in Swanton, VT at Earl Fournier’s farm
Time : Registration/trade show begins at 9:30 AM
Workshop: 10– 3:30 PM (Lunch will be provided)
This workshop will discuss using nutrient dense forages as the primary feed source, the benefits of a diverse pasture stand, and the ideal concentrate ration to offer your cows when feeding a high pasture diet. Quality forage production truly begins in the soil. Balancing macro- and micro- nutrients not only provides higher forage yields, but also results in feedstuffs with greater insect and disease resistance and livestock with improved health and longevity on grassbased diets.
Topics to be covered:
• Determining forage quality in your pasture and harvested forages; including balancing rations on pasture and dealing with soluble protein.
• Using native plants, which provide important nutritional balance and medicinal qualities to livestock.
• Improving animal health, including basic natural remedies from the pantry and the paddock.
• Calculating necessary organic soil amendments to bring a soil to optimum fertility.

Jerry Brunetti speaking on:
Grass-Based or Grain-Based: Why It Matters
Grass is the Forgiveness of Nature  – "All Flesh is Grass"
Grasslands: the future health of our communities, personal health and humanity depend on them.  Global warming, cancer, diabetes, obesity, peak oil and environmental degradation are now commonplace themes of discussion not only in the alternative press, but in mainstream media. Just how related are they to one another? What is the common thread that is unraveling? As G.K. Chesterton said, "It isn't that they can't see the solution. It is that they can't see the problem.” The conversion of our precious grasslands into cereal production has created an onslaught of biological destruction that can be readily connected to an avalanche of health problems in our children as well as a dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico the size of New Jersey. The past has spoken of the collapse of many civilizations, but never have we faced such strains upon the biosphere globally as we do currently. "Grass is the forgiveness of nature" and in our need to sustainably feed ourselves, we must embrace the Biblical axiom that "All Flesh is Grass".
